Kayon Design

The Kayon is the tree of life as represented in the Indonesian shadow puppetry of Wayang Kulit. This image of the tree growing out from the earth represents the fabric of life and the possibility for life on the planet earth. All of the branches of the tree are necessary to facilitate healthy connections to the elements that make up life. If one of the branches becomes injured or broken, the whole of the tree of life could be in jeopardy. The healthy branches must take over vital functions and work harder to preserve the life of the tree and life itself.

It is our responsibility as conscious humans to understand our social and ecological impacts on the planet. As our population continues to grow, so too does our use of natural resources. All too often do we ignore our collective global impact as we constantly encounter consumer products that give little thought to the sustainability of raw materials, production and disposal of those goods and their long-term costs.

Kayon believes there is a better way. Founded in Brooklyn NY in 2005 by artists Nicole Burke and Toby Hansen, Kayon is setting an example for a new business model that carefully considers the impact of consumer goods on the planet. Through helping to create markets focused on sustainability and design, Kayon hopes to inspire everyone to participate in impacting the goods they buy. We strive to educate and empower the everyday consumer by making each of us aware that every dollar we spend can be an opportunity to make lasting efforts toward a better future.

Kayons’ mission is to inform about the real world impacts of our consumer spending. We promote mindfulness by actively engaging our products in the shifting paradigm toward a truly responsible consumer economy. Kayon gives all of the net profit to charity, we understand that not every business can do this, but this is the model we are building upon. In addition Kayon supports the health of our planet through production of these goods. This means supporting sustainable organic agriculture in the production of raw materials, shrinking our ecological footprint in terms of materials and packaging usage and promoting artist and causes that are taking steps toward the fusion of economy and ecology. Creating a better world for us all.
