Sustainability Weeks: 4-18 June 2006 London is a huge and dynamic city. There's plenty in it to love! However London is also a hungry city. Food, fuel, building materials, water and much more pour into London from all over the world. What we do here has an impact on the whole planet and it's time to make some changes. Various Events BBC Springwatch Live Saturday 3 June, 12.00 - 18.00 Bernie Spain Gardens, Upper Ground, South Bank, SE1 9PP If you've been inspired by the BBC's Springwatch with Bill Oddie, come down to London's first ever BBC Springwatch festival. This brand new Coin Street Festival event opens your eyes to the wonders of nature in our great city. Be inspired by the environment around you with a range of hands-on activities for families and children. Take in music on the jazz stage and street theatre along the riverside walkway with a green-fingered theme. There will be market stalls with local produce, food and drink, and cooking demonstrations will reveal what can be made from garden produce. Find about BBC Breathing Places and how you can get involved in transforming a space for wildife and for people where you live. Join expert guides for ‘behind the scenes’ talks, have a go at being a natural history TV presenter, and hear film-makers explain how the BBC's acclaimed Planet Earth series was made. Promise the Earth Celebrate World Environment Day (Monday 5th June) and find out how a small change can make a big difference. Make your online promise here and see how each person's small promise creates big change when others promise too. The Redbridge Recycling Team will hold a stand together with the London Community Recycling Network (London CRN) at the Uphall Recreation Ground re-opening celebration to promote its services to residents. The stall will include a Home Composting Bin Display, a 'lucky dip' with a chance for residents to win a compost bin and a 'seed pot' making activity for the children. Date: 10 June Times: 12:00 - 15:00 Venue: Uphall Recreation Ground, Uphall Park, Cecil Road, Redbridge, IG1 Open Garden Squares Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 June Discover and explore secret places that are known to few but the locals. Over 100 of the capitals private gardens, squares and public parks will open their gates to visitors presenting a rare opportunity to discover some of London's hidden treasures. Tickets, allowing entry all weekend to all participating gardens and including Loire Valley Wines sampling at selected gardens, cost £5.00 in advance or £7.50 during the weekend. Children under 12 free. Advance tickets can be ordered from Capital Gardens from 1st May 2006 through their web site, by phone (020 8347 3230 Mon. to Fri. 9am-6pm), by post or in person from their garden centres. A record number of 139 gardens are taking part this year. Bike Week Saturday 17 - Sunday 25 June Bike Week is the UK's annual 'celebration of cycling'. More than 2000 local cycling events and rides are expected to attract at least 300,000 participants nationwide. West London Green Festival Sunday 18 June 1-5pm in Parsons Green The festival is a showcase for environmental groups to reach out and attract people to their causes. Meet people, become involved and follow a more sustainable lifestyle. Relaxed atmosphere, pedal powered stage. Good Food. Free draw for some bikes. Check out hybrid cars and solar power. Farmers' Markets Happening all the time across London You might just be surprised at how much food is grown in London, both in allotments and in newer community gardens. Local food and organic food are available from ever more food projects and farmers markets: if you've never visited one, this could be a good time to start!
