COLOUR COTTON tells Pecha Kucha how 30 years of development has led to their launch of Perfect Start - the natural colour cotton baby range and
the first eco and environmentally friendly Disney baby range.
More and more parents are looking for natural cotton when it comes to putting fabrics next to their baby’s skin. Unfortunately cotton is a big user of pesticides and insecticides and many of these being highly toxic. According to Pesticide Action UK, Cotton uses 10% of pesticides and 22.5% of all insecticides applied in agriculture but uses only 2.5% of agricultural land. As a result consumers are buying organic cotton, and naturally a large proportion of these are those buying for a young baby. John Conneely, Managing director of Natural colour Cotton believes that “the next decade will define what is acceptable to wear next to your skin as well as what consumers are prepared to endorse from an environmental and ethical viewpoint.”
One new development is Natural Colour Cotton, which is cotton that grows naturally in several shades. After nearly 30 years of development, Natural Colour Cotton Ltd launched cotton in other shades in commercial quantities in Europe in 2004. Natural Colour Cotton is a naturally pigmented fibre that is organically grown in shades of brown, green and beige. Not only does this mean that no chemical dyes are needed, neither is any bleaching process required. This lack of processing may be the reason that the cotton is stronger in terms of tearing and strength and it is more resistant to abrasion. Within three to five years naturally grown colour cotton with no dyes is expected to become mainstream for baby wear and nursery bedding.
Natural Colour Cotton is used in the new Disney’s Loved by Nature range of nursery bedding. Becki Flemming senior manager for Infant at Disney is very excited about the new venture and says ”the combination of this beautiful fabric and character art should bring Disney Baby into homes of a brand new customer base. The new Disney range will celebrate the beauty of nature through linking the much loved Pooh Bear, Eeyore and Piglet with an eco and environmentally friendly approach.” , This beautiful collection is made up of 8 pieces and includes , coverlet, bumper, sleeping bags, sheets and blankets. Each price is embroidered with Winnie the Pooh and one of his friends Eeyore or Piglet, the characters have been softened in colour and have taken on a more natural look.
Last year Natural Colour Cotton Ltd launched The Perfect Start range of baby wear, the range consists of gift sets and separates for newborn to 12 months. The clothes are made from 100% Natural Colour Cotton and are beautifully soft.
Bamboo is one of several new fabrics that are beginning to emerge and appear in nursery fabrics over the last few months. Bamboo is a fibrous grass that grows very quickly and doesn’t require any pesticides and can be harvested only after a few years after planting. Bamboo fabric is naturally anti-bacterial; it is absorbent yet fast drying and doesn’t hold any odour.
