Ruth Walker - Founder of Snood - Shares with us her passion for sustainable, one-off design.

Like many passionate knitters it was my grandma patiently trying to teach me how to knit yet another scarf, without dropping stitches, that got me hooked on this intriguing past time. She still astounds me with the fantastically elaborate and random things she knits such as toilet roll holders and tea cosy’s, all whilst watching the television or reading a book!

For me I wanted to find a quicker way to get quirky results, as well as an ethical and affordable one. I’m afraid the days are gone when it was cheaper to knit your own clothes than buy them. As a knitwear designer I wanted to share my designs with everyone, I didn’t want them to be just for those blessed with lots of spare cash. I wanted to make something unique out of something that already existed, breath life back into a dull lifeless garment and make it exciting, needed and wanted again.

Spring/Summer 07 Collection

And so from my studio in a mill in Huddersfield, Snood knitwear was born. I rescued unwanted garments in the cashmeres, lambswools and merinos and set about transforming these high quality fabrics into something unique, versatile and contemporary.

Everything is sourced, designed and made here in Huddersfield, no air miles, no exploitation, no waste or harm to the environment, just unique, affordable and utterly wearable knitwear .…. even my grandma can’t help being impressed!

Autumn/Winter 07 Collection

Our Spring/Summer range consists of contemporary fluid shapes in lighter weight yarns and thanks to our wonderfully unpredictable English summers are perfect day or evening. Everyone’s been loving our cute and versatile shoulder shrugs this season.

For Autumn/Winter the collection is cosy and encapsulating with a sixties edge. Rouched armhole details and throw on batwing roll necks and ponchos make it an easy to wear and versatile range. Once again in the softest wools, perfect for cosy nights next to an open fire…and maybe you can try a spot of hand knitting yourself …go on, make your grandma proud.
