A women’s cooperative in the Philippines uses an innovative process to turn old newspapers into new and beautiful table mats by wrapping the paper into coils and forming them into spiralled square/round building blocks. These building blocks are then joined together with thread and/or glue. Each mat is then coated with a starch resin to make them hard, shiny and water resistant so that they will stand up to the heat and moisture that comes with average use.
